Etch Removal

If you have any polished calcite stone in your home (marble, travertine or limestone), it is inevitable that your stone will be affected by acid etching. Acid etching occurs when an acidic material comes into contact with calcite stone. When this happens, the stone's appearance becomes dull and splotchy. Often times, etches can be seen as a string of small drops, and are very common in kitchens and bathrooms, where acidic materials can easily come into contact with calcite stone.

True granites are not affected by acid etching, as they contain none of the calcite mineral that reacts with acids. If you have installed granite counters in your kitchen or bathrooms, congratualtions! You will not have to worry about these surfaces acid etching.

If you see evidence of acid etches in your marble, travertine, or limestone, don't despair! A vast majority of these etches can be chemically polished out of the stone; in cases of severe etching, the stone face can first be sanded clean, then polished with the same polishing compound.

If the etch is small, and not deep, you may want to try to remove the etch mark yourself. The Stone Poets sells homeowners an Aqua Mix product designed to chemically remove acid etching from calcite stone.

If the etch is large, or in a conspicuous area, you should hire a professional stone restoration company (like The Stone Poets, for instance), to professionally sand, polish, finish and seal the etched stone.

Feel free to call us if you suspect your stone has been etched. We can make an analysis, recommend a treatment, and resolve the problem for you.
